ok, so let me catch you up on what you've missed since i last wrote...

first of all, i nearly broke my foot a little over a month ago. while celebrating a friend's birthday at our favorite bar in center city, a group of drunken assholes knocked over a barstool. naturally, that barstool landed squarely on my left foot, which was protected by nothing more than a flimsy flip-flop. this sent me to the emergency room the following day. although my foot was not broken, i was sent home in crutches. this seriously cramped my summer work-out schedule.

but these things happen. i weaned myself off the crutches a few days later (not before using them to my advantage in the courtroom), and i'm sure i'll wean myself off these painkillers someday soon.

second, i was the first in my class at work to move from adult misdemeanor trials to our juvenile unit. that means that i try all kinds of cases -- from simple possession of some marijuana to armed robbery -- so long as the clients are under 18. it's hands down my favorite rotation so far. my clients are freaking adorable -- cute little juvenile delinquents. kids with drugs and guns are so cute i could eat them up! and the cases are way more interesting than stupid adult misdemeanors.

third, about a month ago i went out on what was undoubtedly the scariest first (and last) date ever. on paper, it seemed perfect. he was an actuary, i took some actuary tests. he liked fado, i liked fado. he thought i was adorable, i think i'm adorable. you see what i mean.

but everything went horribly awry on the date. things started out "rocky" when he showed me an enormous, sharp-looking hunting knife before we even went out for drinks. things got worse when, on the way to the bar where we were going to get drinks, he informed me that he'd been arrested on rape charges when he was a juvenile. and all of that was topped off with an hour-long argument about the merits of my chosen career and my basic moral structure, which took place over exotic beers at monk's cafe in center city.

needless to say i did not go out with him again. and my lucky romantic streak continues...

fourth, i just returned from spending 5 days at bethany beach in delaware with my parents. way more fun than i expected. super relaxing -- i can't remember the last time i went more than a day without going into work or looking over a case file. plus i'm tanner than i've been in years and i started running again (my running was put on hold as a result of the above-mentioned barstool tragedy). and i'm always happy when i can dine on king crab legs at my dad's expense.

fifth, i finally finished reading "the count of monte cristo," which totally kicked ass, but was also the longest book i've ever read straight through. unabridged, it's like 1079 pages long. and the print is tiny! but i rocked it out, especially when he started getting revenge and having everyone killed. when i finished i took a break and read the 6th lemony snicket book, and then the first book in the c.s. lewis "chronicles of narnia" series. kids' books kick ass.

and sixth, i'm a week away from catching a plane to the dominican republic for 6 days. one of my best friends from law school recently moved to new york, much to my chagrin. she is taking the ny bar exam next week, and afterwards (next friday) we are heading to the caribbean. it'll be a first for me, and i can't f'ing wait. we're staying at an all-inclusive resort at punta cana, which is supposed to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. i'm hoping to do some reading, get more sun, drink a lot of frozen beverages, break out in a kayak, and do some snorkeling. and you never know when you'll feel like a merengue lesson or two. i haven't had a vacation like this in i-don't-know-how-long. maybe i'll get my groove back, if you know what i mean (but hopefully not with someone who later turns out to be gay... see, e.g., toni morrison's recent personal tragedy...).
